Candy Cane
CANDY CANE
The candy cane has long been a Christmas tradition and was said to have been the creation of a fine Christian candy maker in Indiana. Its sweet peppermint taste has been enjoyed by young and old for years.
The candy maker started with pure white candy to symbolize Jesus' innocence (Heb 4:15) and the holiness of the sinless son of God (1 John 1:7).
The white also shows the virgin birth of Jesus: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son..." (Matt 1:23).
He made the candy hard because the church is built on solid rock and God's promises are a firm foundation (Matt 16:18, 1 Thess 5:24), and that Jesus is like a "rock", strong and dependable. (Psalm 31:3).
Next the candy maker made the candy in the shape of a 'J' for the name of Jesus who came to earth as our Savior (Matt 1:21, Acts 4:12). When the candy was turned upside down, it is the shape of the Good Shepherd's staff (John 10:11). "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep".
Finally he stained the candy with red stripes. The color red symbolizes God's love that sent Jesus to give His life for us on the cross (John 3:16).
The large red stripe is for the blood Jesus shed for our sins on the cross (Eph 1:7). "In him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace." The smaller stripes remind of Jesus' suffering and our redemptive healing (John 19: 1-30).
So this Christmas when you and your family hang candy canes on your tree remember that they're not just candy canes. Instead they are a symbol of the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.

ATTITUDE
ATTITUDE
The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised
and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock,
with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even
though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her
husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready.
As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I
provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet
sheets that had been hung on her window. "I love it," she stated with
the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just
been presented with a new puppy.
"Mrs. Jones, you haven't seen the room .... just
wait." "That doesn't have anything to do with it," she replied.
"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my
room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is
arranged ... it's how I arrange my mind.
I already decided to love it ... "It's a decision
I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the
day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body
that no longer work, or get out of bed and be
thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my
eyes open I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've
stored away ... just for this time in my life.
Old age is like a bank account ... you withdraw
from what you've put in .. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a
lot of happiness in the bank account of memories
Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.
No one can go back and make a brand new start.
Anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.
God didn't promise days without pain, laughter
without sorrow, sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the
day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way.
Disappointments are like road bumps, they slow you down a bit but you enjoy the smooth road afterwards.
Don't stay on the bumps too long. Move on!
When you feel down because you didn't get what
you want, just sit tight and be happy, because God has thought of
something better to give you.
When something happens to you, good or bad, consider what it means.
There's a purpose to life's events, to teach you how to laugh more or not to cry too hard.
You can't make someone love you, all you can do
is be someone who can be loved, the rest is up to the person to realize
your worth.
It's better to lose your pride to the one you love, than to lose the one you love because of pride.
We spend too much time looking for the right
person to love or finding fault with those we already love, when instead
we should be perfecting the love we give.
Never abandon an old friend. You will never find
one who can take his place. Friendship is like wine, it gets better as
it grows older.
May today there be peace within you. May you
trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. "I believe
that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings
have trouble remembering how to fly."

A GOOD THING
A GOOD THING
May today there be peace within
May you trust your highest power that you are exactly where you are meant to be
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, and to bask in the sun.
It is there for each and every one of us.

A TRICK
A TRICK
A young man, a student in one of our
universities, was one day taking a walk with a professor, who was
commonly called the students' friend, from his kindness to those who
waited on his instructions.
As they went along, they saw lying in the path a
pair of old shoes, which they supposed to belong to a poor man who was
employed in a field close by, and who had nearly finished his day's
work.
The student turned to the professor, saying: "Let
us play the man a trick: we will hide his shoes, and conceal ourselves
behind those bushes, and wait to see his perplexity when he cannot find
them."
"My young friend," answered the professor, "we
should never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor. But you are
rich, and may give yourself a much greater pleasure by means of the poor
man. Put a coin into each shoe, and then we will
hide ourselves and watch how the discovery affects him."
The student did so, and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by.
The poor man soon finished his work, and came
across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes. While
putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes; but
feeling something hard, he stooped down to feel
what it was, and found the coin.
Astonishment and wonder were seen upon his
countenance. He gazed upon the coin, turned it round, and looked at it
again and again. He then looked around him on all sides, but no person
was to be seen. He now put the money into his pocket,
and proceeded to put on the other shoe; but his surprise was doubled on
finding the other coin.
His feelings overcame him; he fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and uttered aloud a fervent thanksgiving, in which he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread, whom the timely bounty, from some unknown
hand, would save from perishing.
The student stood there deeply affected, and his
eyes filled with tears. "Now," said the professor, "are you not much
better pleased than if you had played your intended trick?"
The youth replied, "You have taught me a lesson
which I will never forget. I feel now the truth of those words, which I
never understood before: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

THE TWO WOLVES
THE TWO WOLVES
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that was going on inside himself.
He
said, "My son, it is between 2 wolves. One is evil: Anger, envy,
sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment,
inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority
and ego... The other is good: Joy, peace, love, hope, serenity,
humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion
and faith..."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one I feed."

SEARCHING FOR A VESSEL
SEARCHING FOR A VESSEL
The Master was searching for a vessel to use;
On the shelf there were many - which one would He choose?
Take me, cried the gold one, I'm shiny and bright,
I'm of great value and I do things just right.
My beauty and lustre will outshine the rest
And for someone like You, Master, gold would be the best!
The Master passed on with no word at all;
He looked at a silver urn, narrow and tall;
I'll serve You, dear Master, I'll pour out Your wine
And I'll be at Your table whenever You dine,
My lines are so graceful, my carvings so true,
And my silver will always compliment You.
Unheeding the Master passed on to the brass,
It was widemouthed and shallow, and polished like glass.
Here! Here! cried the vessel, I know I will do,
Place me on Your table for all men to view.
Look at me, called the goblet of crystal so clear,
My transparency shows my contents so dear,
Though fragile am I, I will serve You with pride,
And I'm sure I'll be happy in Your house to abide.
The Master came next to a vessel of wood,
Polished and carved, it solidly stood.
You may use me, dear Master, the wooden bowl said,
But I'd rather You used me for fruit, not for bread!
Then the Master looked down and saw a vessel of clay.
Empty and broken it helplessly lay.
No hope had the vessel that the Master might choose,
To cleanse and make whole, to fill and to use.
Ah! This is the vessel I've been hoping to find,
I will mend and use it and make it all Mine.
I need not the vessel with pride of its self;
Nor the one who is narrow to sit on the shelf;
Nor the one who is bigmouthed and shallow and loud;
Nor one who displays his contents so proud;
Not the one who thinks he can do all things just right;
But this plain earthy vessel filled with My power and might.
Then gently He lifted the vessel of clay.
Mended and cleansed it and filled it that day.
Spoke to it kindly. There's work you must do,
Just pour out to others as I pour into you.

THE MOUSE TRAP
THE MOUSE TRAP
A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package. What food might it contain? He was aghast to discover that it was a mouse trap. Retreating to the farmyard the mouse proclaimed the warning: "There is a mouse trap in the house, a mouse trap in the house! "The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Excuse me, Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."
The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mouse trap in the house, a mouse trap in the house!" "I am so very sorry Mr. Mouse," sympathized the pig, "but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured that you are in my prayers." The mouse turned to the cow. She said, "Like wow, Mr. Mouse. A mouse trap. Like I am in grave danger. Duh...NOT!"
So the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mouse trap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife.
The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient. His wife's sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.
The farmer's wife did not get well and a few days later she passed away. So many people came for her funeral, that the farmer had the cow slaughtered, to provide meat for all of them to eat. So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when there is a mouse trap in the house, the whole farmyard is at risk.

COME AS YOU ARE. NO JACKET REQUIRED
COME AS YOU ARE. NO JACKET REQUIRED
I
shook my head in disbelief. This couldn't be the right place. After
all, I couldn't possibly be welcome here. I had been given an invitation
several times, by several different
people, and I had finally decided to see what this place was all about.
But, this just couldn't be the right place.
Quickly, I glanced down at the invitation that I clutched in my hand. I scanned past the words, "Come as you are. No jacket required"
and found the location. Yes, I was at
the right place. I peered through the window again and saw a room of
people whose faces seemed to glow with joy. All were neatly dressed,
adorned in fine garments and appeared strangely clean as they dined at
this exquisite restaurant.
Ashamed,
I looked down at my own tattered and torn clothing, covered in stains. I
was dirty, in fact, filthy. A foul smell seemed to consume me and I
couldn't shake the grime
that clung to my body. As I turned around to leave, the words from the
invitation seemed to leap out at me..."Come as you are. No jacket required."
I
decided to give it a shot. Mustering up every bit of courage I could
find, I opened the door to this restaurant and walked up to a man
standing behind a podium. "Your name,
sir?" he asked me with a smile.
"Jimmy
D. Brown," I mumbled without looking up. I thrust my hands deep into my
pockets, hoping to conceal their stains. He didn't seem to notice the
filth that I was covered
in and he continued, "Very good, sir. A table is reserved in your name.
Would you like to be seated?"
I
couldn't believe what I heard! A grin broke out on my face and I said,
"Yes, of course!" He lead me to a table and, sure enough, there was a
placard with my name written
on it in a deep, dark red. As I browsed over a menu, I saw many
delightful items listed. There were things like, "peace," "joy,"
"blessings," "confidence," "assurance," "hope," "love," "faith," and
"mercy." I realized that this was no ordinary restaurant!
I flipped the menu back to the front in order to see where I was at...
"God's Grace," was the name of this place.
The
man returned and said, "I recommend the 'Special of the Day'. With it
you are entitled to heaping portions of everything on this menu". You've
got to be kidding! I thought
to myself. You mean, I can have ALL of this! "What is the 'Special of
the Day'?" I asked with excitement ringing in my voice.
"Salvation,"
was his reply. "I'll take it," I practically cried out. Then, as
quickly as I made that statement, the joy left my body. A sick painful
ache jerked through my
stomach and tears filled my eyes. Between my sobs I said... "Mister,
look at me. I'm dirty and nasty. I am unclean and unworthy of such
things. I'd love to have all of this, but, but, I just can't afford it."
Undaunted,
the man smiled again. "Sir, your check has already been taken care of
by that Gentleman over there," he said as he pointed to the front of the
room. "His name is
Jesus."
Turning,
I saw a man whose very presence seemed to light the room. He was almost
too much to look at. I found myself walking towards Him and in a
shaking voice I whispered,
"Sir, I'll wash the dishes or sweep the floors or take out the trash.
I'll do anything I can do to repay You for all this."
He
opened His arms and said with a smile, "Son, all of this is yours if
you just come unto me. Ask me to clean you up and I will. Ask me to
allow you to feast at my table
and you will eat. Remember, the table is reserved in your name. All you
must do is accept this gift that I offer you."
Astonished,
I fell at his feet and said, "Please, Jesus. Please clean up my life.
Please change me and sit me at your table and give me this new life."
Immediately,
I heard the words, "It is finished." I looked down and white robes
adorned my squeaky clean body. Something strange and wonderful had
happened. I felt new, like
a weight had been lifted and I found myself seated at His table
"The
'Special of the Day' has been served," the Lord said to me. "Salvation
is yours." We sat and talked for a great while and I so enjoyed the time
that I spent with Him.
He told me, me of all people, that He would like for me to come back as
often as I liked for another helping from God's Grace. He made it clear
that He wanted me to spend as much time with Him as possible.
As
it drew near time for me to go back outside into the "real world," He
whispered to me softly, "And Lo, I am with you always." And then, He
said something to me that I will
never forget. He said... "My child, do you see these empty tables
throughout this room?" "Yes, Lord. I see them. What do they mean?" I
replied. "These are reserved tables...but the individuals whose names
are on each placard have not accepted their invitation
to dine. Would you be so kind as to hand out these invitations to those
who have not joined us as yet?" Jesus asked.
"Of
course," I said with excitement as I picked up the invitations. "Go ye
therefore into all nations," He said as I turned to leave I walked into
God's Grace dirty and hungry.
Stained in sin. My righteousness as filthy rags. And Jesus cleaned me
up. I walked out a brand new man...robed in white, His righteousness.
And so, I'll keep my promise to my Lord. I'll go. I'll spread the Word.
I'll share the Gospel... I'll hand out the invitations.
And I'll start with you.
Have you been to God's Grace? There's a table reserved in your name, and here's your invitation... "Come as you are. No jacket required."
"For
by grace are you saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is
the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:

IS YOUR HUT BURNING?
IS YOUR HUT BURNING?
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.
Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried.
Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.
It is easy to get discouraged when things are going bad. But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground ---- it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God.

THE INTEGRITY OF "UGLY"
THE INTEGRITY OF "UGLY"
Everyone in the apartment complex that I that lived in knew who Ugly was.
Ugly
was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world:
fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love. The combination of
these things combined with a life
spent outside had their effect on Ugly. To start with, he had only one
eye and where the other should have been was a gaping hole. He was
also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot appeared to have
been badly broken at one time, and had healed
at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the
corner. His tail has long ago been lost, leaving only the smallest
stub, which he would constantly jerk and twitch.
Ugly
would have been a dark gray tabby, striped-type, except for the sores
covering his head, neck, even his shoulders with thick, yellowing scabs.
Every time someone saw
Ugly there was the same reaction. "That's one UGLY cat!"
All
of the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at
him, hosed him down, squirted him when he tried to come in their homes,
or shut his paws in the
door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If
you turned the hose on him, he would stand there, getting soaked until
you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would curl his
lanky body around his feet in forgiveness. Whenever
he spied children, he would come running, meowing frantically and bump
his head against their hands, begging for their love. If you ever
picked him up, he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt,
earrings, whatever he could find.
One
day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor's huskies. They did not
respond kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled. From my apartment I could
hear his screams, and I tried
to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was
apparent that Ugly's sad life was almost at an end. Ugly lay in a wet
circle, his back and lower back twisted grossly out of shape, a gaping
tear in the white strip of fur that ran down
his front. As I picked him up and tried to carry him home, I could hear
him wheezing and gasping, and could feel him struggling. It must be
hurting him terribly, I thought. Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking
sensation on my ear. Ugly, in so much pain,
suffering, and obviously dying, was trying to suckle my ear.
I
pulled him closer to me, and he bumped the palm of my hand with his
head, then I could hear the distinct sound of purring. Even in the
greatest pain, that ugly battled-scarred
cat was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some compassion. At
that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I
had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try
to get away from me, or struggle in any way.
Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his
pain.
Ugly
died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat there and held him
for a long time afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed
little stray could so alter
my opinion about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love
so totally and truly. Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion
than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could, and
for that I will always be thankful. He had
been scarred on the outside, but I was scarred on the inside, and it
was time for me to move on and learn to love truly and deeply. To give
my total to those I cared for.
Many people want to be richer, more successful, well liked, beautiful, but for me, I will always try to be Ugly.

TO EACH HIS OWN
TO EACH HIS OWN
I cannot change the way I am,
I never really try,
God made me different and unique,
I never ask him why.
If I appear peculiar,
There's nothing I can do,
You must accept me as I am,
As I've accepted you.
God made a casting of each life,
Then threw the mold away,
Each child is different from the rest,
Unlike as night from day.
So often we will criticize,
The things that others do,
But, do you know, they do not think,
The same as me and you.
So God in all his wisdom,
Who knows us all by name,
He didn't want us to be bored,
That's why we're not the same

THE KING'S HIGHWAY
THE KING'S HIGHWAY
Once upon a time, a king had a great highway built for the people who lived in his kingdom. After it was completed, but before it was opened to the public, the king decided to have a contest. He invited as many of his subjects as desired to participate. The challenge was to see who could travel the highway the best, and the winner was to receive a box of gold.
On the day of the contest, all the people came. Some of them had fine chariots, some had fine clothing and fancy food to make the trip a luxurious journey. Some wore their sturdiest shoes and ran along the highway on their feet to show their skill. All day they traveled the highway, and each one, when he arrived at the end, complained to the king about a large pile of rocks and debris that had been left almost blocking the road at one point, and that got in their way and hindered their travel.
At the end of the day, a lone traveler crossed the finish line warily and walked over to the king. He was tired and dirty, but he addressed the king with great respect and handed him a small chest of gold. He said, "I stopped along the way to clear a pile of rocks and debris that was blocking the road. This chest of gold was under it all. Please have it returned to its rightful owner."
The king replied, "You are the rightful owner."
"Oh no," said the traveler, "This is not mine. I've never known such money."
"Oh yes," said the king, "you've earned this gold, for you won my contest. He who travels the road best is he who makes the road better for those who will follow."
Remember those words of wisdom as you travel the road of life!

SPEAK GENTLY
SPEAK GENTLY
Speak gently. It is better by far
to rule by love than fear.
Speak gently. Let no harsh word mar
the good you may do here.
Speak gently to the young, for they
will have enough to bear;
pass through this life as best they may,
'tis full of anxious care.
Speak gently to the aged one
Grieve not the care-worn heart,
whose sand of life are nearly run,
let such in peace depart.
Speak gently, kindly to the poor,
let no harsh tone be heard.
They have enough they must endure
without an unkind word.
Speak gently...'tis a little thing
dropped in the heart's deep well;
The good, the joy that it may bring
eternity shall tell.

LESSONS ON LIFE
LESSONS ON LIFE
There was a man who had four sons.
He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent
them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that
was a great distance away.
The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall.
When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen.
The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted.
The second son said no it was covered with green buds and full of promise.
The
third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so
sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had
ever seen.
The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment.
The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life.
He
told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one
season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and
love that come from that life can
only be measured at the end, when all the seasons are up.
If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, fulfillment of your fall.
Moral:
Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest.
Don't judge life by one difficult season.
Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come some time or later.

OUR LIVES
OUR LIVES
As we look back over our lives,
it is not too difficult to see that what we went through was for a
purpose and helped to prepare us for some valuable work in life.
Everything
in our lives can help make us of some use in the world. Each person's
life is like the pattern of a mosaic. Each thing that happens to us is
like one tiny stone in the mosaic, and each tiny stone fits into the
perfected pattern of the mosaic of our life,
which has been designed by God.

BEFORE I WAS A MOM
BEFORE I WAS A MOM
Before I was a Mom - I made and ate hot meals. I had unstained clothing. I had quiet conversations on the phone.
Before I was a Mom - I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got into bed. I brushed my hair and my teeth every day.
Before I was a Mom - I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom - I had never been puked on, wet on, spit on, chewed on, or pinched by tiny fingers.
Before I was a Mom - I had complete control over my thoughts, my body, my mind. I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom - I never held down a screaming child so that doctors could do tests, or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom - I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put it down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I could not stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom - I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body. I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didn't know that bond between a Mother and her child. I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important.
Before I was a Mom - I had never gotten up every ten minutes, in the middle of the night, to make sure that all was okay. I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderfulness, or the satisfaction of being a Mom. I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom.

LUCKY
LUCKY
Anyone who has pets will really like this. You'll like it even if you don't and may decide you need one. Mary and her husband Jim had a dog, Lucky. Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably someone would forget and something would come up missing. Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.
It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease...she was just sure it was fatal. She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders.
The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim he was Mary's dog through and through. If I die Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand that I didn't want to leave him. The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.
The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully but the dog just drooped, whining and miserable. But finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed.
When Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong. She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. Panic soon gave way to laughter though when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed in every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement and back bringing his beloved mistress his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love. Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every night.
It's been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.
Live every day to the fullest...because every day is a blessing from God! He covers you with His treasures and His love!
Hugs,
May you always have work for your hands to do.
May your pockets hold always a coin or two.
May the sun shine bright on your windowpane.
May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you.
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

WORDS
WORDS
I have always had a special love for words. Words have such power in them. The right words can uplift, inspire, heal, and create endless joy and love in our lives. The wrong words can depress, discourage, hurt, and bring us endless misery and pain. It is so very important then to try and choose the right words in our lives. By choosing the right words I don't just mean saying the right words or writing the right words either. I also mean thinking the right words. It is amazing the garbage that so many of us allow ourselves to think each and every day of our lives.
In order to live a truly blessed life we must haul away the garbage and start to plant words that will grow into a garden of joy and light in our minds. Start today then to make the words in your life work for you and not against you. Do away with "can't" and "no". Try "can" and "yes" instead. Say, " I can be happy, I can choose joy, and I can share love." Say, "Yes" to life, to learning, and to growth. Begin to use words like: Wonderful, Beautiful, and Delightful when you speak to others. Find a word of praise for everyone you know and then share it with them. Look the people you love straight in the eye and tell them, "I love you." Seek our every fantastic, fabulous, and glorious word that you can and start to use them in your life.
Words are such simple things and yet they have the power to change our lives forever if we use them right. Make the choice every day of your life to use all of the good, positive, and loving words you can every second that you can. If you do this you will find that your life will become a paradise of love and joy, that other people will become your brothers and sisters in happiness, and that God's goodness will shine through every word you use....
